This film is note worthy for its personal yet universal themes and an exceptional cast lead by the always engaging Ewan McGregor, the legendary Christopher Plummer and the beautiful French actress Melanie Laurent. From writer/director Mike Mills, this is a comedy/drama about how deeply funny and transformative life can be, even at its most serious moments. ‘Beginners’ imaginatively explores the hilarity, confusion, and surprises of love. Oliver meets Anna only months after his father has passed away. This new love floods Oliver with memories of his father who, after a long marriage, came out of the closet at age 75 to live a full, energized, and wonderfully tumultuous gay life. This life change, both funny and moving, brings father and son closer together and inspires Oliver to love with the same bravery, humor, and hope.
