About the Film
This is a portrait of The New York Times photographer Bill Cunningham. For decades, this Schwinn-riding cultural anthropologist has been obsessively and inventively chronicling fashion. Documenting uptown NY personalities including Anna Wintour, Tom Wolfe, Brooke Astor, David Rockefeller, downtown eccentrics and everyone in between, Cunningham’s enormous body of work is more reliable than any catwalk as an expression of time, place and the style of today. In turn, this film is a delicate, funny and often poignant statement of a dedicated man whose art is created from the street life of New York, his own humanity and unassuming grace.
