About the Film
In 16th-century England, an impoverished Latin tutor named William Shakespeare (Paul Mescal) meets free-spirited Agnes (Jessie Buckley), sparking an affair that leads to marriage and three children. As Will seeks his fortune in the London theater, Agnes anchors the domestic sphere alone. The couple’s bond is tested when tragedy strikes, but their shared experience sets the stage for the creation of Shakespeare’s timeless masterpiece, Hamlet. Academy Award-winning filmmaker Chloé Zhao (“Nomadland,” “The Rider”) illuminates the complexities of love and the healing power of art and creativity.
Winner of the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival’s People’s Choice Award. Winner of 2 Golden Globe Awards: Best Picture – Drama and Best Actress – Jessie Buckley.
