About the Film
After bringing the story of the American soldiers who fought in the battle of Iwo Jima to the screen in Flags of Our Fathers, director Clint Eastwood offers an even more powerful portrait of the Japanese side that according to most critics is one of the best films of the year. It is one of the five Oscar nominees for Best Picture of the Year. With Steven Spielberg as the producer, the recreation of the battle of Iwo Jima takes on monumental and epic size. It is among the most important historical films ever made. General Tadamichi Kuribayashi is hypnotically played by Ken Watanabe, who also was honored with an Oscar nomination. As Kuribayashi and his men dig in for a battle they are not certain they can win — and most have been told they will not survive — their story is told both by watching their actions and through the letters they write home to their loved ones, letters that in many cases would not be delivered until long after the war. Filmed in Japanese and in part on Iwo Jima, this is one of the most authentic films of our times.
