MAYA AND THE WAVE – Thursday, September 26th at 7pm, Not Rated, 95 min
Maya Gabeira always dreamed of surfing giant waves. In 2013 she attempted to surf the infamous big wave in Nazaré, Portugal, and nearly drowned. In the following years, Maya underwent three spine surgeries and weathered a psychological breakdown. But Maya has the blood of a rebel. Her father is the legendary Brazilian activist and politician, Fernando Gabeira. With the same radical spirit, Maya endures – and succeeds. On January 18, 2018 an unprecedented storm approached Nazaré and Maya surfed the biggest wave a woman has ever surfed. She fought for recognition and became the first female surfer honored with a Guinness Book World Record. Two years later, Maya was the first woman to compete in the men’s division of a big wave competition. She surfed the biggest wave of the year (73.5 feet), breaking her previous world record. In the footsteps of Billie Jean King, Maya achieved a rare moment in sports–outperforming all men to show the world that women are capable of anything. In Portuguese and English with English subtitles.
“An inspirational role model… stupendous surfing footage, a combination that will enthrall most viewers” – Variety

GRIZZLY 399: QUEEN OF THE TETONS, Saturday, September 28th at 7pm, Not Rated, 88 min – Utah premiere!
For nearly two decades, Grizzly #399 has been a fixture in Grand Teton National Park. Known only by her research number, #399 has captivated photographers since 2007, becoming the most famous – and photographed – grizzly in the world. The film follows #399 as she struggles to raise an unusually large four-cub litter in the face of human encroachment and a rapidly changing climate. While the narrative follows #399’s decisions and the escalating human conflict, “399: Queen of the Tetons”raises bigger thematic questions about humans’ relationship with nature and how we connect, control, consume and conserve it.
“Whether or not you’ve heard of 399 before watching this film, it’s hard not to fall in love with her by the end of it.” —McKenna Johnson, Montana Kaiman
