About the Film
Placed in a nursing home by his son, Abner Meecham, played by the remarkable Hal Holbrook, realizes that waiting to die is no way to live. A retired farmer, he returns to his beloved home to discover that his son has leased the family farm to an old nemesis. Determined to enjoy his last days and retrieve what he feels is rightfully his, he refuses to leave, and takes up residence in an old tenant shack on the property. Feeling betrayed by his son and haunted by dreams of his beloved deceased wife, Abner draws a line in the sand in an attempt to reclaim his life.
Though the movie is filled with complex emotions and a powerful poignancy, it is often darkly funny thanks to Holbroo’s wily performance. – Los Angeles Times
