This film was honored with its U.S. premiere on the opening night of the most recent New York Film Festival and has been nominated for 5 Golden Globe Awards.
18th Century England is ruled by an eccentric queen. The court is obsessed with royal access and the frivolity of the rich. A frail Queen Anne (Olivia Colman) occupies the throne and her close friend Lady Sarah (Rachel Weisz) governs the country in her stead while tending to Anne’s ill health and mercurial temper. When a new servant Abigail (Emma Stone) arrives, Sarah takes Abigail under her wing and Abigail sees a chance at return to her aristocratic roots. Abigail steps between Sarah and the Queen igniting sparks and a tempest in this frothy, sexy dark comedy.
“Bathed in a score of Vivaldi, Bach, and Purcell, it’s Lanthimos’s most watchable movie to date, and also his best. The Favourite is a triumph in textures, a beam of light through a window.” -The New Republic
