About the Film
In February 2005, artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude installed 7,500 arches (gates) with orange cloth curtains that waved and
billowed along miles of walkways in Central Park. The Gates stood for 16 days, the first one unfurled by Mayor Bloomberg,
who championed the project, giving it the okay after a 25-year quest by the artists to gain approval. Archival footage shows
pro-and-con debates and various mayors and commissions turning down the project. In the end, art dwarfs the naysayers.
Dr. Angelika Pagel, who received her PhD in Art History from the University of California, Berkeley, and currently teaches Art
History at Weber State University, will introduce the film and lead a Q&A after the screening. This is a joint event organized
by the Kimball Art Center and Park City Film Series. Food, wine and beer will be available for purchase and can be brought
into the theater. “The Gates” was directed by Antonio Ferrera and Albert Maysles.
