About the Film
The filmmaking team of Ismael Merchant and James Ivory have been responsible for many great hits including Howard’s End, Room With A View and The Remains of the Day. Their last film (Mr. Merchant passed away last year) is The White Countess starring Ralph Fiennes, Natasha Richardson, Vanessa and Lynn Redgrave.
Set in Shanghai in 1936, the film follows the struggles of a former Russian Countess who works as a nightclub dancer and woman of the street. Ralph Fiennes plays a former American diplomat jaded with international politics who employs the Countess as the hostess of his new nightclub.
