About the Film
Water was the opening night film of last year?s prestigious Toronto International Film Festival. Director Deepa Mehta tells the deeply moving story of an ashram filled with Hindu widows forced to live as untouchables and in poverty.
The film is set in India in 1938. One widow, only 9 years old, makes friends with a beautiful young woman who is forced to sell herself to feed all the others. An idealistic disciple of Gandhi learns of the young woman?s plight and, falling in love, tries to save her. This is a sweeping romantic story of historical and human rights importance.
